The United States local government utility systems like sewage and water are the major source of wastewater operator jobs. The US has vast and numerous cities, therefore the employment opportunity is excellent. These jobs are one of the most important jobs due to the basic necessity of human, animal, and plant life – water. Workers however, are exposed to toxic chemicals and other pollutants in the treatment facilities of these systems. The workers must therefore be aware of such exposures and the effects they may have. Private sectors also offer these types of jobs, so there are more opportunities for job seekers all over the United States.

Life on earth depends on water, yet many people are oblivious about how the system works or how the water comes to every home, groundwater, stream, or reservoirs. It is a complicated process to treat wastewater from the sewers and drains and to then release it safely back to the surroundings. Wastewater operator jobs like these treatment system and plant operators control and oversee the process, manage the equipment, and at the same time, check the systems and treatment plants to make sure the water is safe to drink.

Another type of wastewater operator jobs is the liquid waste system and treatment plant operators. The reservoirs, streams, wells, and rivers provide the water treatment plants for chemical treatment and distribution for consumers. The wastewater or used water from our drains directly goes to the sewers and to the treatment plant where it is processed or treated so that the water can safely go back to the oceans, seas, rivers, streams, and then the water is irrigated for crops production. Operators of both water treatment plants and wastewater treatment plants control and manage various types of equipment and processes to remove pollutants like chemicals, dirt, germs, and bacteria from the water. Operators maintain records of the process, the water quality, and other activities in the plants.

Water or wastewater operator jobs maintain and operate many motors and pumps that move the wastewater all the way through the filtration systems. They can carry out adjustments and vigilantly monitor the controls. They also read gauges and meters to indicate proper operation of the equipment. Operators take water samples and carry out tests to find out the quality of the water after the processing. For water treatment plants for consumer use, they may add or reduce the chemical additive to the water like fluorine and chlorine, just enough to make it safe to drink and free from things that shouldn’t be there.

The local government and other private sector owned treatment plants have different duties set for water and wastewater operator jobs. The size and type of the plant and the processes sometimes differ. Large or medium sized plants have workers that work in shifts that cover a full 24 hour monitoring of the plants. Operators also work to trouble shoot, during a storm or any malfunctions in the equipment. Proper safety equipment should be used to minimize work hazards and to protect the public from leaking chemicals from the plants.

Requirements for water and wastewater operator jobs are high school diploma and extensive on the job training. Some larger treatment plants that use computers may require an applicant to take up basic computer courses and on the job training as well. These jobs are offered in many career or vocational colleges found throughout the United States, basically every city. Workers with higher education background can move up to higher positions. These jobs are virtually going to be around forever. If the water stays, the jobs will too. Water and wastewater operator jobs salary are about $40,000 dollars to start with. The highest salary back in 2008 was $50,000.
