Plant life in water is prolific as well as varied, thanks to the profusion of marine flora. Marine botany is one stream that provides a host of job opportunities, requiring the marine botanists to work in different areas from academic institutions, and government, to industry, aquariums or their own businesses. Marine botanists engaged in academia are typically required to carry out research on algae, kelp and other underwater plants. They would also of course deliver lectures to students as well.

On the other hand, marine botanists, who work for the government or industry, carry out research, help with educational activities and provide consultation on all relevant matters. There can also be self employed marine biologists who are responsible for marketing a product or provide expert advice. In fact, the ambit of marine botany has greatly expanded to include things like the use of seaweed in industry, pharmaceuticals, plastics, toothpastes and so on.
