Essential Duties & Responsibilities: 

Assist in the development, coordination, planning and implementation and evaluation of environmental programs and/or projects mandated by federal, state and local laws and statutes. 

Manage the AlexRenew Industrial Pretreatment program in accordance with requirements of the VPDES permit and state and federal regulations.

Participates in development of control strategies and policies for sewer discharge and other water quality issues. 

Coordinate and collaborate with appropriate City and/or County staff in such development and implementation.

Assist in audits of AlexRenew data and recordkeeping for all regulatory compliance requirements, including wastewater, storm water, air, recycle, wastes, ISO, EMS and another other requirement; make recommendations for actions to management.

Lead the cross functional development and implementation of environmental policies and practices, including VEEP, EMS and ISO standards organization wide.

Establish, monitor and audit AlexRenew’s environmental management systems to continually improve process, compliance, financial and sustainable efficiency and effectiveness.

Interprets and explains application of laws, codes, ordinances, and procedures which govern implementation and enforcement of pretreatment and/or pollution prevention regulations.

Research and track all federal, state and local regulations that may affect AlexRenew

Advise management of pertinent and timely regulations and make recommendations on the appropriate departmental actions. 

Provides regulatory expertise and permit processing support to managers and staff.

Supports Chief in overseeing consultant’s performance of any environmental sample collection and analysis program.

Assists in making technical presentations to in house staff and regulatory agencies and related public agencies

Implements and assists in developing permit processing and inspection practices and procedures related to compliance with regulations affecting operations and facilities maintenance projects to manage environmental liabilities.

Develops and maintains effective working relationships with a diverse staff; builds trust and collaborative relationships with city of Alexandria, Fairfax County, and Arlington colleagues.

Coordinates staff training by assisting in preparation of materials and presenting to team members on environmental programs and policies.

Promote and raise awareness, at all levels of an organization, of the impact of emerging environmental issues.

Qualification Requirements:

Education and/or Experience:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a recognized university or college in natural science, mechanical, civil, sanitary, environmental, science or other closely related field required; Advanced degree preferred.

Two (2) years of experience in a wastewater treatment facility, laboratory services, storm water and pollution prevention or sanitary engineering capacity.

Knowledge of: principles of wastewater treatment, storm water and/or pollution prevention; common laboratory technology; current federal, state and local laws, codes and ordinances; quality control practices

Self-starter with innovation, integrity and attention to details

Understanding of sustainability and environmental topics and fundamentals

Experience with data analysis

Experience working in cross-functional teams and ability to build and maintain strong and positive relationship across the organization

Able to communicate effectively, and to synthesize and communicate findings appropriately

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical information in a concise way to a non-technical audience, and vice versa

Ability to manage and organize multiple projects with competing priorities and different timescales (i.e.: checkpoints with long-term goals while completing shorter term goals)

Basic program or project management experience
