Master planning and modeling for watersheds, stormwater, and/or wastewater utility systems

Systems modeling and decision support for water supply reliability, sustainable watershed management, integrated water resources planning and climate change adaptation

Feasibility studies, alternatives analyses, and conceptual design development for surface water improvements such as green stormwater infrastructure, erosion control, water quality treatment, flood mitigation, and stream stabilization

Regulatory compliance related to surface water management (NPDES, NFIP, etc.)

Water quality modeling and TMDL implementation planning

Flood hazard mapping and mitigation planning and design

Decision making and optimization relating to criticality, risk, and reliability


As a Principal Engineer you will plan, develop, coordinate, and execute projects with full technical responsibility. You will be expected to act independently on technical matters pertaining to specialized areas, as well as direct the work of other engineers to achieve project goals and meet client expectations. In this role, you will work closely with our senior staff and client service managers to advance our technical services and support business development on a wide variety of water resources projects for both private and public sector clients. Additional responsibilities may include:

Develop project approaches to meet specific goals and objectives including the preparation of detailed scopes, schedules, and budgets

Manage multidisciplinary water resources engineering projects to achieve client goals within scope, schedule, and budget constraints

Provide consultation in specialized areas related to water resources engineering such as hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, environmental water quality, or statistical analyses

Direct the preparation and completion of comprehensive technical reports and presentations

Prepare and make presentations for professional meetings with clients and technical teams

Support and lead business development endeavors such as client outreach, proposal writing, and interviews

Participate in improving company resources and tools to improve quality and efficiency

Supervise, delegate, direct, coach and mentor junior technical staff

Desired Skills and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in civil or environmental engineering with an emphasis in surface water; Master’s preferred

15 years of engineering experience in water resources or related field with progressively increasing responsibility

Professional Engineer (PE) registration in State of Washington or ability to obtain within 6 months

Hydrologic and hydraulic modeling experience in support of water/wastewater/stormwater planning and design projects, including knowledge of surface water hydrology, open channel and closed conduit hydraulics, inflow and infiltration in collection systems, water quality, and related statistical methods

Proficiency with advanced modeling, data management, and/or statistical software a plus (e.g., EPA-SWMM, MIKE-URBAN, InfoWorks ICM, HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, HSPF, CE-QUAL, ArcGIS, Excel VBA, GoldSim, Statistica, or R)

Strong written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to prepare effective written documents

Strong project management skills with demonstrated experience managing staff within scope/schedule/budget

Successful marketing, proposal writing, and proposal management experience a plus
