The Staff Engineer I is expected to apply the concepts learnedthrough required education, and common sense to solve specific engineeringrelated tasks within allotted schedules and budgets. Seeks guidance from moresenior engineering staff and applies acquired knowledge to related assignments.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESDesigns portions of a project using relevant officesoftware, modeling and/or CADD technology.Completes calculations using engineering formulas and skillsand/or utilizes computers in order to solve problems.Prepares specification materials through the use of researchand manufacturing catalogs to specify materials, installation, inspection andpayment of items specific to a project.Works with CADD Technicians in order to complete designdetails and plan sets.Performs research and writes objective summary reports whichare used in the completion of project work or inspection.Assists in the preparation of engineering and constructioncost estimates.Completes field observation, inspection and data collectionduties as directed by senior engineering staff.Communicates with client staff and internal design team asdirected by senior engineering staff.EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCEThe Staff Engineer I must possess a Bachelor’s or Master’sdegree from an accredited four-year or graduate engineering university inrelevant discipline. May possess between zero and two years of relevantengineering experience. Basic knowledge of office software (Word, Excel,etc.) is required. Proficiency in CADD software required for somepositions. LANGUAGE SKILLSMust possess strong technical verbal and writing skills.Must be able to read and interpret technical literature and engineering plans. REASONING ABILITYMust be capable of correctly operating technical analysisequipment and computer equipment after being provided training. Mustpossess analytical and problem solving skills, and be able to apply engineeringknowledge toward solving assigned tasks and engineering activities. Mustbe willing to develop competence in field inspection issues including dailyprogress documentation, measurement of quantities, quality assurance andcontractor relationships.EXTENT OF AUTHORITYWorks cooperatively with other Staff Engineers, Planners,and Scientists, and CADD Technicians. May communicate with clients on alimited basis as directed/authorized by the Project Manager, and communicateswith subcontractors on specific technical and/or non-technical issues, but isnot authorized to make commitments on behalf of the company related to fee,project tasks or project schedules without approval of supervisor. Provides input to senior staff on project issues based on the results ofanalytical results, calculations, field observations and research. Responsible for completion of tasks, reports, and plans, but is not authorizedto sign/seal completed plans as an authorized representative of the company.RELATIONSHIP TO OTHERSThe position reports directly to the designated GroupManager with the day-to-day direction of Project Engineers, Project Managers orother staff for assigned projects. Works to quickly and accurately solveassigned tasks, but is expected to seek guidance from senior engineering stafffor non-standard and non-routine issues. Has limited contact withexternal clients unless assigned to do so by a project manager or other seniorengineering staff. Cooperates with CADD and Field Technicians in thecompletion of assigned tasks.CERTIFICATES AND LICENSESMust have received, or receive within six months of hire, avalid E.I.T. license. The employee must be capable ofdriving/operating a motor vehicle for company business, and maintain a validdriver’s license in the state of residence.PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENTWork is primarily performed in a standard officesetting. Field assignments may be required. While performing work in anoffice environment, the position requires the use of office equipment. Equipment includes, but is not limited to, computer, telephone, fax machine, copier,printer, etc. The noise level in the office is moderate. Whileperforming the duties of this job, employee is regularly required to stand,sit, talk and hear. Must frequently orally convey detailed or importantinformation, instructions or ideas intelligently, accurately and quickly. Ableto hear average or normal conversations and receive information. Readhandwritten, typed or machine generated text, graphical and statisticalmaterial without aides other than eyeglasses and/or contact lenses.While performing field assignments, the employee is requiredto work in extreme weather conditions (heat, cold, snow, rain) for extendedperiods of time and stand for 8 to 12 hours per day. Exposure to extremeheat and humidity working outdoors; temperature swings from indoorair-conditioning to outdoors, extreme noise and dust from constructionequipment and hand tools at sites; mechanical and radiation hazards atindustrial and construction sites; electrical hazards of electrical wiring;explosive hazards; fumes and odors of gases and exhaust; dust of environment;toxic chemicals and waste. This work requires standing on uneven terrain.Employees must also be able to and lift and move a minimum of 30 lbs., Hand eyecoordination is necessary to operate computers and other office equipment asrequired.
