Profile

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent

Three (3) years of experience in a field related to construction, maintenance, or operations, to include at least one (1) year of experience in repairing or maintaining water or related systems

Licenses or Certifications

Valid Class “C” Texas Driver License

Must obtain Class D Water License issued by

TCEQ

within 18 months of hire. Class C Water Distribution License from

TCEQ

required before expiration of Class D Water Distribution License.

Work Environment

This position is in a heavy industrial setting and requires performing all duties associated with operating heavy equipment outdoors in all weather conditions including extreme heat, cold and rain. This position will include cross training in operations of various equipment. Position will require adaptability and willingness to change or modify work load on demand and multitask. Requires working in environments which may have hazardous situations.

Confined Space Entry Requirements

Candidates must be able to work in environments which may have hazardous atmospheres or in confined spaces where there is limited or restricted means for entry and exit, or where the activities of an employee are hindered. Candidates must be able to perform duties with confidence at sites where descending into confined spaces up to 20 feet deep is required. Safety equipment such as a harness is required for entering confined spaces. Candidates must be able to qualify for Austin Water’s Respiratory Protection Program.

Driving Requirements

Applicants must be at least 18 years old, hold a current applicable driver’s license, and have no more than six (6) points assessed on Driver Record Evaluation (

DRE

). Please review the

to assess your driving record.

DRE

will be verified through the Department of Public Safety. Job Offer is contingent on having a driving record that meets the City’s Driver Record Evaluation Standards.

Pre-Employment Testing Requirements

Selected candidate will be required to complete and pass a physical exam.

Successful candidate must pass a pre-employment Functional (FC) strength/agility test (with or without accommodations) to be considered for this position. Candidates must be able to qualify for Austin Water’s Respiratory Protection Program.

Technical Licensure

This position requires employees to obtain a Class “D” Water Distribution License from Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (

TCEQ

) within 18 months of employment. Must obtain Class “C” Water Distribution License before expiration of Class “D”.

TCEQ

All Austin Water worksite locations are tobacco-free.

Pay Range

$18.83 – $23.42 per hour

Hours

Monday – Friday, 7:30 am – 4:00 pm

May be required to work extended hours, modified shift work, after hours emergency work, bad weather days, and holidays as required by business need.

Preferred Qualifications

Two (2) years water meter repair, exchange, testing or reading experience

Experience using the following equipment: air compressor, trash pump, hand/power tools

Experience with Computer Maintenance Management Systems and other computer software such as Microsoft Office,

GIS

or Internet based programs

Experience and ability to work in confined spaces using confined space entry equipment

Knowledge of customer service techniques and skills

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

1. Repairs, installs, maintain, and tests water meters, fire hydrant meters, and water valves.

2. Checks, refills, changes fluids, belts, hoses, safety features, on trucks, pumps, equipment.

3. Reviews plans and specification of work assignments.

4. Operates and uses a variety of powered and unpowered equipment.

5. Conducts flow tests on water meters.

6. Reads and interprets meters, gauges, maps and profiles.

7. Records data and completes reports.

8. Determines methods, operations, sequences, and sets procedures for assigned work.

9. Evaluates quality of work in progress and upon completion, directs and assists in grounds maintenance activities, ensuring proper restoration of property and cleanup.
